Romance Films
we have researched romantic films and have found out different things we can do to improve our film and different things we can include if we were going to do a romantic film.
Romantic Music
music in romantic films is very important it can put and audience in a particular mood that goes with what is happening in the film, the lyrics in the song can also relate to whats happening and so can emphasis the mood in the film.
The sound track to 'Notting Hill' is a 'ronan keating' song 'when you say nothing at all' this explains the story through the song and puts the audience in a more romantic mood.
romantic music can just be instrumental. usually it is played on piano and is relaxing and flows well.

Romantic Titles
font
usually the font for a romantic film is like a fairytale style of writing, it is swirly and feminine and can have things like hearts for full stops. the writing is usually pink or bright happy colours.
romantic films are called things such 'love and other drugs', 'angus thongs and perfect snogging', 'p.s i love you' all these things are related to love and this makes it clear what the film is going to be about.
in 'Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging' when the film starts and the titles come up they are in swirly writing and are accompanied with music, this put the audience in a good mood and makes them want to continue watching the film.

Romantic Locations
romantic films can be set in many different places, in the city or country, or in both like in 'The Holiday'. we could do a teen romance and set it in a school, this would be a good place to film as we spend a lot of time there. we could set the film somewhere up in London as it is well known and a lot is going on, most romantic films show day to day life and London represents this well. if we had a high budget we could even do something in Paris as this is a very romantic location.

Analysis Of Romantic Film - Pretty Woman
A man in a legal but hurtful business needs an escort for some social events, and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets... only to fall in love.
- during the film there are many will they wont they moments
- they are opposite that attract and at first they dont seem like a match that would go together well
- there is lots of romantic music that is in the film, the lyrics in some of the songs match what is happening in the film. this also set the mood for the film
- there are different romantic settings in the film such as hotels and romantic city scenes.
Analysis of Romance Film - The Last Song
- another genre we were thinking about doing our film on was romance. the film the last song is a drama/romance.
- A drama centred on a rebellious girl who is sent to a Southern beach town for the summer to stay with her father. Through their mutual love of music, the estranged duo learn to reconnect.
- most of the film is filmed in a beach house, we could film somewhere near a beach although it would be difficult to access all the time.
- the film also has a relationship between a teenage boy and girl, this would be easy to achieve as the people we are thinking of having in our film are all around the age of 16/17.
- the film has long takes, this gives the audience time to think and allow them to sympathise with the character. it also has close ups to see the characters feelings and cross cutting which shows all the different characters and their lifes.
- there is slow motion and different clips are merged together to show a long period of time shortened so you can see what has happened in a short space of time (ellipsis). these are accompanied by dissolves and music to made it flow and put the audience in a relaxed mood. we could use this technique in our film.
Horror Film
from our research on horror films we have found things that we would do in our film to make it better.
Review of Horror Film
we have done a review oof paranormal activity 3 to help us when we come to making our film.
Horror Music
music is used in horror films, this puts people in edge and the music is jumpy, this is a good way to start a horror film as it put the audience in the right frame of mind.
The study looked at a class of noises called 'non-linear' sounds. These range from the sort of distorted notes that come from a hi-fi cranked up too high, to the squeal produced by blowing too hard into a trumpet.
Jaws
The music to jaws is jumpy and it is not calm and peaceful its very loud, it goes from mellow and calm to suddenly really jumpy, this makes the audience feel uneasy
psycho theme
this music is also very jumpy and has high pitch sounds, it sounds as though the music has been sped up and this makes it sounds distorted and not very relaxing.

Horror Titles
horror titles are very important for setting the scene for a good horror film, some horror films have inter titles and sometimes they have black screen titles, but one thing that tends to stay the same is the font and colour. horror films have names like 'saw', 'when a stranger calls' and 'creep', all things things are associated with danger so suit a horror film well.
Font
the font in horror films tends to look old, this could show that the event was in the past. most horror titles have smeared writing and very sharp and jagged, this makes things feel on edge and not smooth writing that makes you feel more relaxed. the sharp writing also shows danger like weapons. the writing also tends to be big and bold as this has more of an impact. the writing is also sometimes shaky and blurry, this gives the effect of it not being clear an ghost like.

Font colour
most horror film fonts are dark colours, this makes it more serious and depressing, the dark colours also represent night time which is more frightening and when things normally go wrong in horror films. the colours are also normally red as this represents blood and death.
'The Strangers' titles
the film starts with black screen titles, this makes it mysterious as to what happens next. the font is orange which is a colour associated with Halloween, this adds the the effect of a horror film. the titles also explain what has happened and sets the scene for the film. this gives the audience and brief idea about what is going to happen.
Possible Location - Horror
we have started looking at possible locations for the film we are going to do. we have thought about doing a horror film and so we went to Charlotte's house and took some pictures as she lives in a house that is in the middle of Fields, this makes it very rural and typical for a horror film. she also has farm machinery and sheds around her house which will also set the scene and can be used during the horror film. as the house is surrounded by fields and a wood we would have everything we needed to around us to be able to make the film. also as it is Charlotte's house it is easy to get to and can be used at any time, this also means that other people such as the public would not get in our shots and make it difficult to film.
this is in the garden and this shows different places we could film and the machinery which sets the scene for the horror film.
these are some of the surrounding areas around Charlotte's house.
this i inside one of the sheds at the back of Charlotte's House, this looks scary and there are ropes and wood which can be used as props for our film.
this is Charlotte's he through the trees and this shows some of the shots we could use for the horror film.
this is Charlotte's House which we could use as the main scene for the horror film.
this is the road leading up to Charlotte's house that we could use in the film.
this is another shot we could using in the horror film, this shows the bars on a gate which makes it look closed in and it shows the machinery.
this is another road that is near Charlotte's house.
these are the woods that back onto Charlotte, we could do some filming in the woods, this would be a good setting for a horror film.

Horror Film Analysis - creep
creep is a horror/thriller. it is about a women who gets stuck in the underground one night, where she is being pursued by a potential attacker heads into the unknown labyrinth of tunnels beneath the city's streets.
Creep is filmed in the underground, this would be difficult to film in the same way as the film as she was alone in the underground and if we were to film there it would be very difficult to make it seem as though the person was alone as the would be members of the public all around us.
In creep the killer is made to look very thin and pale with scars on his face, we could achieve this with makeup to make the killer look scarier. there is not allot of dialogue in the film and is all about the main character trying to get away, she is by herself allot in the film and so most of the sound is noises coming from the underground and noises of the killer, this builds suspense as you know something is going on but you just cant see it, this would be good to use in out horror film as it puts the audience on the edge of their seats.
as we are thinking of doing a film in an isolated location we could use the idea of there not being allot of dialogue and most of the sounds added in or in the surrounding. this film also has the effect of a handheld camera, such as when the girl is running, this makes it feel as though you are running with her and outs the audience in her shoes.
the film also uses long takes and close ups, this builds suspence while showing how the characters are feeling.
there are pans in the film to show the setting and this shows the audience how alone she is, we could use this in our horror film.
Horror Film Analysis - Paranormal Activity
paranormal activity is set in a normal household in a neighbourhood, this makes the audience relate to their situation and feel as though this could happen to them, this makes it scarier and it is more realistic. is also looks very realistic and like real footage because it is filmed as though the camera is being hand held and this gives the film a more dramatic feel to the shot. this also emphasise the feeling that it could happen to anyone, making the audience feel more involved and more vulnerable. this type of filming would be achievable for our final idea as it does not require allot of equipment and is therefore lower budget making it easier for us to achieve.
throughout the film when the paranormal activity is happening there is allot of door slamming, footsteps, creaking noises and lampshades moving, this would also be achievable for us and with the right editing could look really effective. during the film there are lots of noises added in synchronous sound, this makes the film more jumpy and scarier for the audience.
during the film there are many long takes, this builds suspense for the audience and puts them on the edge of their seat, this is important to create a good horror film. some scenes are cut out and shortened throughout the film, this keeps up the pace when there is action happening and makes it more gripping and interesting for the audience. this is also mixed with some sequence shots, this makes it interesting as you see exactly what is going on and this makes it seem more lifelike, this goes well with the home made film as there is not normally editing in homade films.

Film Review Twilight- Breaking Dawn
we went to see twilight breaking dawn and have done a review for the film...

Preliminary Task
We had to do a preliminary task and included match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180 rule. match on action is where a cut in film editing between either two different objects, two different spaces, or two different compositions in which an object in the two shots graphically match, often helping to establish a strong continuity of action and linking the two shots metaphorically. A shot/reverse shot is when a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character, and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other. we also used the 180 rule we had practice before by making sure that all of the filming was done on one side of the imaginary line. For the match on action we had someone walking towards a door and starts opening it and then coming out the other side of the door. this made the clip flow better and made it more interesting. This worked well as we made sure his hands were in the same place when opening the door and that everything in the background was the same from each angle. such as other people in clip where in the same postion. The clip was a nice pace and flowed well. There was a slight continuity error with sounds as the door squeaked. In our final video we would do match on action to make the clip more interesting but next time we will be more careful with sound. We did the 180 rule and shot/reverse shot through a conversation, this worked well because there was no confusion with where people were in the clip and who was talking to who. To make it even clearer that the two people were talking to each other in the shot we started with an over the shoulder shot so you can see both character facing each other, we then did shot/reverse shot to see each person talking through the clip. Something else we would improve on for our final video would be better control over the camera and making sure we used the tripod for all shots. after we had recorded all the shots we edited it so that there was good continuity.

180 Rule
in filmmaking the 180 rule is basic guidline that states the two characters in the same scene should have the same left/right relationship to eachother.
